Get The Most Out of Your Used Car

Review

It’s given you so many years of safe and reliable service, but now you know it’s time to let it go. Or maybe your fancy has been captured by a shiny, new ride and you want to trade in or trade up. There are lots of ways to make the most of your used car. Here are some of the best options.

Sell Your Car Yourself

Doing a little legwork is probably the best way to get a great deal for your used car. Take some nice photos of your cars shiny and clean exterior and interior. Compile all the important facts about it (does it have AC? Does it have power windows and steering? What kind of radio?). Spring for a certified third-party inspection to make potential buyers more confident. Check with your insurance company about test drives and see if you’re covered should an accident happen while out on one. Gather all the pertinent selling paperwork from your local DMV.

Once you’ve done all that, post everywhere you can. This is a good route if you’re looking to sell a car that’s a little too old to easily find a dealer to buy it, or if you want to try and get the most money you can. It’s not a great option if you need to sell in a hurry or don’t have time to field phone calls and test drives.

Trade Your Car to A Dealer

Dealers are desperate for inventory and will happily help you upgrade to a nicer car in the process. Have an older car with poor gas mileage? Chances are good new cars by that maker will kick your older car’s gas mileage to the curb. Looking for a smaller/larger/sexier/safer car? There’s never been a better time to upgrade. (And if you’re still not sure which car is the car for you, we have an archive of new car reviews you can peruse.)

Sell Your Used Car To A Dealer

Like we mentioned above, dealers are desperate for inventory. Even if you don’t have any plans to buy a new car right now (or buy a new car from the dealer) you can still sell your car for a good price. This is great for saving time and hassle trying to sell a car. There’s no guarantee that a dealer will want to buy your car, but if it’s only a few years old, chances are good you can find a buyer today! We have a great way to set things up quickly, which we call Sell It Now.

Donate Your Car

You’re shaking your head sadly at the very idea that someone would want to buy your old, non-classic beater in the garage. Worry not, because you can do something even greater than make a few dollars. You can help make the world a better place!

Lots of charities will accept donated vehicles, and will even pick them up and tow them away for you. Apart from all the good feelings you’ll get, you can often get a decent tax break for doing so. Talk about bang for your beater buck!
